The historic Grand Opera House announces a new series of events to coincide with the monthly Downtown Oshkosh Gallery Walk as part of its 125th anniversary season. Beginning on September 6 The Grand will open its historic doors to showcase the talents of local artisans on the first Saturday of every other month during the Grand’s 2008-09 Season (September 6, November 1, January 3, March 7 and May 2).
“The Grand has been a part of downtown Oshkosh for 125 years and we wanted to commemorate that anniversary by becoming a regular participant in what has become the signature monthly event Downtown,” said executive director Joseph Ferlo. “Our goal is to continue to put Wisconsin artists on The Grand stage and provide a gathering place for the community to come and celebrate the thriving arts community.”
On September 6, The Grand will host a display of historic photographs from the Oshkosh Public Museum showcasing The Grand and Oshkosh as it has changed through the years. Live music will be provided by Rob Anthony (www.robanthonymusic.com), while members of the Appleton Renaissance School will perform selections from the Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged), part of the annual Shakespeare on the Fox collaboration.
While the official Gallery walk runs from 6 to 9 p.m., Ferlo said he’d like to see The Grand become the final destination for Gallery Walk visitors, so entertainment will continue at The Grand until 10 p.m.
Plans for future dates are still coming together, but each will include a visual artist as well as a live performer and in January 2009 The Grand will bring back its Top 100 Preview Night (where the community gets to help pick the performers for next season) as part of the Gallery Walk Series.
The Gallery Walk at The Grand Series is sponsored by the Oshkosh Area Community Foundation and the Water City Grill.
